Vaccine mandates are waning worldwide. Is it finally over?

The Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s mandates. Biden said there are no immediate plans to reissue similar edicts. Hallelujah!

Is this the beginning of the end for vaccine mandates? Possibly.

Starbucks announced that they were backing off vaccine mandates and others major companies have done the same. Globally, we are seeing a reversal from mandates as well in Czech Republic and England.

I don’t know if this a verified sign of a return to our old normal but I will take what I can get. At the very least, news from the past 2 months keep me encouraged. (see below)

This week…

Chicago Sun Times:

In a statement after the Supreme Court ruling, Biden expressed disappointment with the outcome but said the mandates have already had their desired effect on reducing the number of unvaccinated adults.

“Today, that number is down to under 35 million,” he said of the unvaccinated. “Had my administration not put vaccination requirements in place, we would be now experiencing a higher death toll from COVID-19 and even more hospitalizations.”

While the court left open the possibility for the U.S. to pursue more targeted mandates, White House officials said there were no immediate plans to seek a redo of the regulation.

“It’s now up to the states and individual employers to put in place vaccination requirements,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Friday.

Associated Press:

Starbucks is no longer requiring its U.S. workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19, reversing a policy it announced earlier this month.

In a memo sent Tuesday to employees, the Seattle coffee giant said it was responding to last week’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6-3 vote, the court rejected the Biden administration’s plan to require vaccines or regular COVID testing at companies with more than 100 workers.

“We respect the court’s ruling and will comply,” Starbucks Chief Operating Officer John Culver wrote in the memo.

CNBC News:

General Electric suspended its Covid vaccine and testing requirement on Friday after the Supreme Court blocked the Biden administration’s mandate, a company spokesperson told CNBC.

ABC News:

PRAGUE — The Czech Republic‘s new government on Wednesday dismissed the previous government’s plan to require older adults and people in some professions to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Last Month…

NY Post:

England has scrapped plans to make COVID-19 vaccine passports mandatory for nightclubs and other crowded spaces, a top health official said Sunday.

Health Minister Sajid Javid confirmed that the country won’t go forward with its plans to begin requiring proof of vaccination later this month at the venues.

“What I can say is that we’ve looked at it properly, and while we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, I’m pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for vaccine passports,” Javid told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

The Hill:

Amtrak suspended its coronavirus vaccine mandate for employees following a federal court’s decision to halt President Biden’s health directive.

In a memo to employees on Tuesday, Amtrak Chief Executive Bill Flynn said employees could opt to get tested weekly instead of getting the vaccine.

Biden’s mandate required all federal contractors to get the coronavirus vaccine or face termination.

A federal court halted the mandate pending litigation, causing some companies to rescind the policy.

3 News Now:

CLEVELAND — Two days after a federal judge put in a preliminary injunction against the start of President Joe Biden’s mandate that health care workers become fully vaccinated, University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic have both announced that its caregivers may continue to provide patient care service regardless of vaccination status.

Becker’s Healthcare:

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is pausing its COVID-19 vaccination mandate amid recent federal court decisions, except for states in which it operates that have their own mandates, according to a statement shared with Becker’s.

HCA announced a mandate in November to comply with CMS requirements for healthcare workers.

Before CMS created a mandate, HCA had encouraged workers to get vaccinated and made shots readily available but had not mandated inoculation, the for-profit hospital operator said.

For now, that’s it from me. Back later after a quick Starbucks run eventhough I do not drink coffee. Its important to show support.
